Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • The first session is an information gathering session for both of us.  I get to learn about what brings you to therapy and you get to learn about how I will try to help.

You should expect to tell me some details about your emotional or relational state and have an idea of what goals you have for therapy.  Don’t worry, I will guide the process with thoughtful questions if you don’t know where to start.  By the end of the first session, I usually have a good idea of how I will try to help you.  I’ll share my proposed treatment plan, and why I came up with it, and then we will decide if we both want to contract to continue working together.

  • You determine how long you want to be in therapy.  We will decide on goals once you start therapy and, if you feel like you have accomplished your therapeutic goals, you may choose to end therapy or transition to a maintenance phase.

  • For the most part, everything is confidential.  I am bound by professional and ethical standards to ensure your confidentiality.  However, limitations around confidentiality arise when your or someone else’s personal safety is at risk.  If you speak about actively wanting to hurt yourself or someone else, I will take measures to ensure your safety or another person’s.  This might mean I have to tell someone close to you so we can all work together to keep you, or someone else safe.  I am also bound by legislation to report any information about current child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.

  • I offer both.

  • I provide direct billing for RCMP, military, and Residential School survivors.  All other clients pay me directly and submit their receipts to their extended health insurance company so they can be reimbursed.
